What is GLASS?

The Global Leaders and Scholars in STEM (GLASS) Honors Program is NYU Tandon's honors program. Every year, a maximum of 25 students are chosen to be part of the program, spending the next three years focus on a chosen United Nations (UN) Sustainability Goal and/or National Academy of Engineers (NAE) Grand Challenge. Throughout the program, students focus on NYU Tandon's key areas of excellence including Cybersecurity, Data Science, Urban Sustainability, and Emerging Media. Additionally, all students are required to complete 12 components of the 5 GLASS windows, focusing on topics such as Global Competency, Commitment to Service, Leadership Development, and more.

What Are the Five GLASS Windows?

The GLASS windows consist of five components focused around guiding principles for student success. They are also in line with NYU Tandon's goals creating the "unconventional engineer" that draws upon diverse perspectives and a global context when thinking about the biggest challenges facing society today. For each of the windows, a minimum of two components were required. Below are the experiences I have had the amazing opportunity to enjoy, and the how they affect me today.

Global Competency

Korea University Student Exchange Program

During my Spring 2023 semester, I did a study abroad student exchange program at Korea University. While there, I took courses in Korean language, discrete math, and computer science. I also had the opportunity to travel around South Korea and learn about the culture and history of the country. Additionally, I was an undergraduate researcher, joined the Korea University Debate Club, and participated in a language exchange

Summer Abroad at NYU Shanghai

During my Summer 2023 semester, I studied abroad at NYU Shanghai. I completed a course focused around learning Chinese, and also visited cities such as Hangzhou, Suzhou, and Changzhou.

Commitment to Service

LA Food Bank

Community Service with Theta Tau

During my Fall 2023 semester at NYU, I completed numerous community service activities with Theta Tau, the professional engineering fraternity at NYU. I did park cleanup at Fort Greene, volunteered with a local church in Downtown Brooklyn helping combat food insecurity, participated in "leaf day" which also focused around park cleanup, and also attended numerous service events around making carepackages for the homeless.

LA Food Bank with DirecTV

During my Summer 2024, I participated in a community service event where we helped create boxes containing different canned and packaged foods to fight food insecurity in LA. The event was hosted at the LA food bank where I worked with 30 other interns to help create these packages.

Leadership Development

Secretary of NYU's Asian Cultural Union

During my Fall 2022 semester, I was the secretary of the Asian Cultural Union at NYU. I helped develop partnerships and sponsorships for the student organization, working with local businesses in the Washington Square Park and East Village area of New York City.

Director of Operations at Rogue Aerospace

As the Director of Operations at Rogue Aerospace, I was responsible for managing the marketing, finance, and public relations subteams. I focused on obtaining sponsorships, developing the finance team, and also increasing out public outreach and followers on social media platforms.

Academic Excellence

VinUniversity

Korea University Undergraduate Research

I assisted graduate students with their research on deep learning and image processing, helping to enhance their understanding and contribute to their projects. Additionally, I enriched the Computer Science learning experience by reading and analyzing research papers, staying updated with the latest advancements in the field. Lastly, I also gave presentations on the work I completed and the progress I made.

Sustainable Cities Course at VinUniversity

I completed a two-week study abroad program at VinUniversity, where I took part in the "Digital Twin to Tackle Sustainable Development Issues in Smart Cities" course in Hanoi. This experience allowed me to deepen my knowledge of digital twin technology and its application to address sustainability challenges in urban environments. I also had the opportunity to develop a simulation to model pollution in the Hoan Kiem Lake area, helping me learn more about sustainability and meaningful policy solutions.

Professional Development

Intern at NYU Urban Future Labs

I assisted the software development team by working on front-end functionality and enhancing the user experience. In addition, I conducted quality assurance, unit, and integration testing to ensure the software was fully functional before being released to clinicians and customers. I also created frameworks in Figma to prototype and ideate potential interfaces throughout the software development life cycle, contributing to the overall design process. Lastly, I also got to participate in the Designpreneuers Hackathon at the Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship pitching my idea to investors.

Data Engineering Intern at DirecTV

I completed a data engineering internship with DIRECTV, where I developed data pipelines using Snowflake and automated workflows with Databricks to support the training of machine learning models. This experience allowed me to apply my skills in data engineering and automation, contributing to the efficiency and effectiveness of machine learning initiatives. I also did QA testing for their internal AI chatbot and developed algorithms to measure different behaviors of viewership.
